چکیده

On-demand ride-sharing, as one of the most representative sectors of sharing economy has received a lot of attention and significant debate. Limited conclusive empirical research has been done to investigate the social welfare of such service. In this research, we conduct difference-in-difference analysis to examine the impact of Uber, an on-demand appbased ride sharing service, on urban traffic congestion. We find that after Uber entry, congestion of this area has been reduced significantly. In order to check the robustness of the results, we conduct instrumental variable analysis, additional analysis using alternative measures. Findings of this research will contribute to IS community by enriching the literature of digital infrastructure platforms. Practical insights derived from this research will help inform policy makers and regulators. Keyword: digital platforms, ride-sharing services, sharing economy, traffic congestion

Do Ride-sharing Services Affect Traffic Congestion? An Empirical Study of Uber Entry

Sharing economy platform, which leverages information technology (IT) to re-distribute unused or underutilized assets to people who are willing to pay for the services, has received tremendous attention in the last few years. Its creative business models have disrupted many traditional industries (e.g., transportation, hotel) by fundamentally changing the mechanism to match demand with supply i...

Coordination of Players in Ride-Sharing Games by Signaling

Sharing unused vehicles is one practical solution for traffic congestion. We propose an advanced vehicle-sharing service that maximizes the sharing of vehicles and improves traffic efficiency by coordinating user trips via an information system. We formulate ride-sharing games that model externalities in vehicle sharing caused by insufficient vehicle supply. We show how Bayes correlated equilib...

A general framework for modeling shared autonomous vehicles with dynamic network-loading and dynamic ride-sharing application

Shared autonomous vehicles could provide low-cost service to travelers and possibly replace the need for personal vehicles. Previous studies found that each SAV could service multiple travelers, thereby eliminating several personal vehicle trips, and strategies such as preemptive relocation or dynamic ride-sharing could further improve service. However, a major limitation of previous studies is...

Previous studies found that each SAV could service 29 multiple travelers, thereby eliminating several personal vehicle trips. However, a major 30 limitation of previous studies is the reliance on custom software packages with unrealistic 31 congestion models, ...
